Should an AI on its own decide who gets a bank loan?
Human and AI collaboration means people and AI systems working together on a task, with AI handling the parts it does well and a person reviewing, deciding and staying responsible for the outcome. This is often called keeping a human in the loop.
In simple words
Think of a cricket team using data. The computer shows where a batter usually hits the ball. The captain still decides where to place the fielders, because the captain knows the pitch, the weather and the mood of the match. The data helps; the captain decides.
Why it matters
AI can be wrong, biased or confused by situations it has never seen. When decisions affect people's health, money, jobs or freedom, a person must check the result and be accountable. Collaboration gives the speed of AI with the judgement of people.
How it works
A hospital example
- A patient's scan is taken (person).
- AI checks the scan in seconds and marks areas that look unusual (AI).
- A doctor looks at the marked areas and the patient's history (person).
- The doctor decides on treatment and explains it to the patient (person).
- The result is recorded, and the AI is checked against it later to see how often it was right (AI and people).
Try it yourself
A team of two checks the loan forms
Follow one form through a bank that uses AI well.
Who does each step of the hospital task?
Assign each step to the person or to the AI.
Explain the diagnosis kindly to the family
Scan thousands of images for unusual spots
Overrule the AI when something seems wrong
Sort appointments to reduce waiting time
Decide the treatment
Common mistakes
- Accepting an AI answer without checking because the computer said so.
- Letting AI make life-changing decisions alone.
- Ignoring AI completely. Used well, it saves time and catches things people miss.

- A person must stay responsible for decisions that affect people.
